BlackBerry Phone

At Research in Motion I served as the UX Prime for BlackBerry’s Phone application, responsible for the UX design (product requirements, design flows, and user research) of:

  • Phone and Call Screen UI
  • Text Messaging (SMS)
  • Voicemail / Visual Voicemail
  • Mobile Voice System
  • Push To Talk

The Process

The typical process involving myself (UX) worked as follows:

  1. Receive product/marketing requirements from the stakeholders (Product Management, Marketing Research, & the Carrier)
  2. Work with/without Product Management and Development to decide on features to be implemented (based on BlackBerry Standards, future design directions, past user research, and resources)
  3. Work with/without Product Management to create a Product Requirements Document [PRD] specifying these features and a product roadmap
  4. Barter with stakeholders regarding the PRD
  5. Create a design specification document outlining the architecture and intended interactions to satisfy the product requirements
  6. Present this document to Product Management, Development, and stakeholders, and constantly revise as things change (Agile Environment)
  7. Conduct iterative UX Research (expert evaluations, surveys, usability testing, etc.) as needs arise and to evaluate/validate designs
